UAE · Residence medical screening · Verified September 22, 2026
Most adult expatriates applying for or renewing UAE residence need a medical fitness certificate. The test is designed to screen for specified communicable diseases. The exact booking system, centre, tests, fees and result route depend on the emirate and your job category.
Who normally needs the residence medical test?
The UAE Government states that residence-visa applicants aged 18 and above must undergo medical fitness screening. That includes adult family dependants as well as workers when the residence category requires it.
Where do you take it?
There is no single walk-in centre for the entire UAE. Use the authority that handles screening in your emirate:
- Dubai: use the Dubai-authorised medical fitness/residency screening route.
- Abu Dhabi: use the emirate’s Disease Prevention and Screening Centre route.
- Sharjah, Ajman, Umm Al Quwain, Ras Al Khaimah and Fujairah: Emirates Health Services (EHS) provides residency medical fitness screening through designated centres.
Do not book a generic private health check and assume it can replace the official residence screening.
What happens during the test?
The screening is not a general wellness exam. It focuses on the health conditions specified for UAE residence. The UAE Government identifies HIV and tuberculosis among the communicable-disease checks, with additional tests applying to certain occupational groups.
EHS’s current residency-fitness process can include registration, payment, radiology/X-ray where required, medical evaluation and laboratory testing. The exact sequence can differ by category and emirate.
Some jobs have extra screening requirements
The UAE Government lists additional requirements for categories such as domestic workers, nursery workers, food handlers, salon/beauty workers, health-club workers and healthcare workers. Syphilis and hepatitis B checks can apply to listed occupations, and some categories have vaccination requirements.
Documents to prepare
- valid passport
- Emirates ID if already issued/available for your case
- recent personal photo when the provider requires one
- residence/visa application details or unified number where requested
- job or sponsor details for category-specific screening
The EHS system asks applicants to identify the visa type, screening centre, profession and contact information. Dubai and Abu Dhabi can use different booking fields, so follow the live emirate-specific service rather than a copied checklist.
How do you get the result?
Results are increasingly electronic. EHS states that it sends completion/results notifications by email and SMS. The certificate is then used in the residence process; in many workflows the immigration authority can receive or verify the result electronically.
Processing time and express options vary by provider and centre. Do not assume the fastest package offered in one emirate exists in another.
What about the fee?
There is no single UAE-wide price. As one current example, EHS lists category-based fees for its residency medical-fitness service, with additional service-centre charges possible. Dubai and Abu Dhabi publish their own service structures. Check the official booking page immediately before paying.
Five mistakes new residents should avoid
- Booking the wrong emirate’s service.
- Assuming a private medical check is sufficient.
- Using another worker category’s test checklist.
- Relying on an old fee screenshot.
- Waiting until the end of a residence deadline to book.
