For most travellers, the best route from Schiphol Airport to Amsterdam is either the NS train or Amsterdam Airport Express bus 397. The train is usually best for Amsterdam Centraal and rail connections; bus 397 is often more convenient for Museumplein, Rijksmuseum and Leidseplein. Taxi, Uber and Bolt win when luggage, late arrival or a door-to-door trip matters more than price.
Quick choice
| Your destination | Usually easiest | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Amsterdam Centraal / old centre | NS train | Direct, around 16–17 minutes |
| Museumplein / Rijksmuseum | Bus 397 | Direct stop without going via Centraal |
| Leidseplein | Bus 397 | Direct airport bus |
| Amsterdam Zuid | Train | Fast rail connection; check live planner |
| Hotel far from rail/bus stop | Taxi / Uber / Bolt | Door to door |
| Very late arrival | N97 or taxi/app ride | N97 is the night airport bus; taxi apps remain practical |
Train to Amsterdam Centraal: fastest for many travellers
Schiphol Airport railway station is directly below Schiphol Plaza. You do not need an airport shuttle to reach the platforms.
NS currently lists Amsterdam Centraal–Schiphol at about 16 minutes on its route page, while its Schiphol destination page describes the journey as roughly 17 minutes. Trains run frequently throughout the day, but track work around Schiphol is common enough that you should check the NS planner on the day.
The current 2026 one-way e-ticket price starts around €5.50 for Amsterdam–Schiphol. The exact fare shown in the live journey planner is authoritative for your route. A paper/single-use ticket bought from a machine or service point can carry an additional surcharge, so contactless/OVpay, OV-chipkaart or e-ticket can be more straightforward.
How to pay for the train
You can use an NS e-ticket or check in and out with an eligible contactless bank card/phone through OVpay. If you use OVpay, use the same card or device to check in and out.
If you plan to use Dutch public transport beyond the airport trip, our OVpay vs OV-chipkaart vs NS Flex guide explains the broader system.
Bus 397: best for Museumplein, Rijksmuseum and Leidseplein
The Amsterdam Airport Express 397 leaves from bus stop B17 outside Schiphol Plaza. Connexxion currently says it runs about every 10 minutes and serves Museumplein, Rijksmuseum and Leidseplein without requiring a transfer.
The current single Airport Express ticket costs €6.50. It is valid on 397 and the night route N97 between Schiphol and central Amsterdam. Connexxion also supports OVpay on the Airport Express, letting you tap in and out with a contactless bank card or supported device.
If your accommodation is around Museum Quarter or Leidseplein, taking a train to Centraal and then another tram/metro leg can be less convenient than simply taking 397 from the airport.
Night arrivals: N97 or taxi
At night, Connexxion uses N97 as the Niteliner version of the airport service. The current Airport Express page says it operates approximately once per hour overnight.
If you land very late, have children or heavy luggage, compare the wait for N97 with a taxi/app ride rather than automatically choosing public transport.
Taxi, Uber and Bolt
Schiphol has an official taxi rank directly in front of Schiphol Plaza and says reservations are not required. Uber and Bolt have a separate official App pick-up point; follow terminal signs rather than accepting unsolicited taxi offers.
Taxi/app prices depend on the destination, time, traffic and vehicle. Compare the live quote rather than relying on an old fixed airport-to-centre figure from a blog.
What if you have a lot of luggage?
The train is still workable because Schiphol station is inside the airport complex, but Amsterdam Centraal can involve lifts/escalators and a final tram/metro/walk. For two or more travellers with several suitcases, the extra taxi cost per person can become easier to justify.
Common mistakes
- Taking the train to Centraal when the hotel is actually next to Museumplein or Leidseplein.
- Forgetting to check out when using OVpay.
- Using a different bank card/device to check out than the one used to check in.
- Assuming every train from Schiphol goes to Amsterdam Centraal.
- Not checking engineering works in the NS planner.
- Following unofficial taxi solicitors instead of the official rank/app pickup point.
