From Zayed International Airport (AUH), the cheapest route into Abu Dhabi is usually the public bus, while an official taxi or authorised ride-hailing service is easiest with luggage or a door-to-door hotel trip. The airport’s current A-series buses operate 24/7.

Airport buses: the cheapest practical option

Zayed International Airport’s official transport page says the A-series airport buses operate 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Stops are just outside the Arrivals area.

The most useful city routes for many travellers are:

  • A1: Al Zahiyah (City Centre), serving areas including Al Reem Island and Tourist Club Area.
  • A2: Khalifa Street, serving Al Markaziyah and Al Khalidiya.
  • A10: Mohammed Bin Zayed City Bus Station.
  • A40: Al Shahama Bus Station.

Other airport routes serve Khalifa City and additional local destinations. Because routes and stopping patterns can change, check the official airport schedule for the route nearest your accommodation.

Current airport bus fare: around AED 4

The airport currently describes the one-way public-bus fare as typically around AED 4. That makes the bus dramatically cheaper than a private car for a solo traveller.

You need a Hafilat card to use Abu Dhabi public buses. The airport says cards can be bought and topped up at ticket machines near the airport bus stops. Cash is not accepted onboard.

Official taxi: simplest door-to-door option

Official taxis and limousines are located directly outside the Arrivals hall. This is usually the easiest choice if you are carrying several bags, travelling with children or staying somewhere that would require another transfer from the bus.

Taxi cost and travel time depend on your destination and traffic, so use the live meter and airport signage rather than relying on an old flat airport-to-city estimate.

Careem, Uber and Yango

Zayed International Airport supports authorised ride-hailing services including Careem and Uber, and its official page also links to Yango. Arriving passengers should follow the in-app directions to the airport’s designated ride-hailing pickup zone in the Arrivals car park.

For safety, the airport specifically warns passengers not to accept unsolicited ride offers from individuals inside the terminal. Book through the official app and meet the driver in the designated zone.

Which option should you choose?

  • Solo and budget-focused: A1 or A2 if the route serves your area.
  • Hotel near Corniche / central areas but not near your bus stop: compare A1/A2 plus walking with a direct taxi.
  • Several bags or children: taxi or ride-hail.
  • Late-night arrival: buses still operate, but taxi may be easier after a long flight.
  • Staying outside central Abu Dhabi: check A10/A40/K4 or take a direct taxi depending on the destination.

Common mistakes

  • Arriving without a Hafilat card and expecting to pay cash on the bus.
  • Assuming every A-series bus goes to the same part of Abu Dhabi.
  • Accepting an unofficial ride offer inside the terminal.
  • Using Dubai transport information for Abu Dhabi.
  • Choosing a bus route without checking whether the final stop is actually near your hotel.
