A UAE resident with a valid residence visa can sponsor qualifying family members if the current income and relationship requirements are met. The federal salary threshold is AED 4,000 per month, or AED 3,000 plus accommodation; job title is no longer the deciding factor.
Who can a resident sponsor?
- spouse
- unmarried daughters under the applicable rules
- sons under 25 under the standard rule
- children with special needs without the standard age restriction stated for sons
- other qualifying relatives under separate residence categories where applicable
The salary requirement
The UAE Government currently states that an expatriate resident can sponsor family with a minimum salary of AED 4,000, or AED 3,000 plus accommodation. Employees can sponsor family regardless of job title when the other conditions are satisfied.
Documents commonly required
- sponsor’s valid passport, residence and Emirates ID details
- family member passports and photos
- attested marriage certificate for a spouse
- attested birth certificates for children
- salary/employment evidence
- proof of suitable accommodation where required
- health-insurance evidence where the emirate/residence process requires it
Medical fitness for adults
Family members aged 18 or older who are being sponsored need to undergo the required residence medical-fitness screening. See our UAE residence medical fitness guide.
ICP vs Dubai
Family-residence processing can run through ICP in the federal system, while Dubai residents may use GDRFA Dubai routes for Dubai-issued residence files. Start with the authority responsible for the sponsor’s residence rather than submitting to both.
For the federal digital-services side, see our ICP Smart Services guide.
Common mistakes
- Using the old profession/job-title sponsorship rule.
- Submitting unattested marriage or birth documents.
- Forgetting medical fitness for sponsored family members aged 18+.
- Using ICP for a Dubai file without checking GDRFA requirements.
- Relying on a fixed document checklist copied from an old article; requirements can change by emirate and case.
