Cancelling a UAE residence permit affects more than the visa itself. The linked Emirates ID is cancelled with the residence, dependants may need to be cancelled first, and your legal grace period after cancellation depends on the residence category. Banking is separate: visa cancellation does not automatically close every bank account, but your bank may need updated residency and identity information.

Who cancels the residence permit?

The route depends on how your residence was sponsored. For employer-sponsored private-sector workers, the employer normally completes the employment/work-permit cancellation process through MOHRE and the immigration cancellation through the relevant residency authority. Other sponsored or self-sponsored categories use ICP or, for Dubai-issued files, GDRFA Dubai according to the residence type.

What happens to your Emirates ID?

ICP’s residence-cancellation service states that cancelling a residence permit also cancels the linked Emirates ID card. Do not treat an unexpired physical Emirates ID as proof that the residence is still active after cancellation.

If you are new to the ID system, our Emirates ID guide explains how the ID is tied to UAE residency.

Do dependants have to be cancelled first?

ICP says family members’ residence permits under a foreign worker’s sponsorship must generally be cancelled before the sponsor’s own residence is cancelled, unless an approved hold/status-change arrangement applies. If you sponsor a spouse or children, check their files before submitting your own final cancellation.

How long can you stay after cancellation?

There is no single grace period for every residence type. ICP currently lists the following post-expiry or post-cancellation periods:

  • 180 days: selected categories including Golden, Green and Blue Residence holders and their family members, widows/divorced women of residents, students after completing studies, and certain foreign-passport relatives of UAE citizens
  • 90 days: skilled workers in levels 1–3 and property owners
  • 60 days: residence permits issued with a guarantor or host
  • 30 days: other categories not covered by the longer periods

Because category determines the deadline, check the actual immigration record instead of relying on an old rule of thumb. Our ICP vs GDRFA visa-status guide shows where to check a UAE file.

What happens if you stay past the grace period?

ICP currently lists an overstay fine of AED 50 per day, starting from the day after the applicable grace period ends. If your plans change, resolve the status before the grace period expires rather than assuming the cancellation date itself is the final departure deadline.

Does cancelling the visa automatically close your bank account?

Not automatically. UAE banks are required to maintain current customer identification and risk information. CBUAE due-diligence rules distinguish between UAE residents and non-residents and require financial institutions to update customer information periodically and when relevant events occur.

In practice, the bank may ask you to update your passport, Emirates ID/residency details, address, employment or tax-residency information. Depending on the bank and account type, the account may be converted, restricted or closed if you no longer meet the product’s conditions. Contact the bank before your departure rather than assuming all services continue unchanged.

If you are still opening or managing a UAE account, see our UAE bank-account guide.

What else should you do before leaving?

  1. Save a copy of the cancellation confirmation.
  2. Check dependent visas before cancelling the sponsor’s file.
  3. Confirm your exact grace-period category.
  4. Update banks and other financial providers with your new residency status.
  5. Settle employment, housing, utility and telecom obligations separately.
  6. Keep access to UAE Pass/official records until all final documents are downloaded.

Five mistakes to avoid

  1. Assuming the physical Emirates ID remains valid because its printed date has not passed.
  2. Using one universal grace-period number for every residence category.
  3. Cancelling the sponsor’s residence before dealing with dependent files.
  4. Assuming visa cancellation automatically closes or preserves every bank account.
  5. Waiting until the end of the grace period to resolve an overstay or status change.
