The best way from Dubai International Airport (DXB) depends heavily on your terminal, arrival time, luggage and final destination. Terminals 1 and 3 have direct Dubai Metro Red Line stations; Terminal 2 does not. Taxis and ride-hailing work from all terminals, while public buses also serve all three.

Metro: usually the best-value option from Terminals 1 and 3

Dubai Airports confirms that the Red Line connects directly with DXB Terminal 1 and Terminal 3. If your hotel or home is near a metro station, this is often the simplest low-cost route into areas such as Deira, Bur Dubai connections, Downtown, Business Bay, Dubai Marina and JLT.

Dubai Airports currently lists these regular metro operating windows:

  • Monday–Thursday: 5:00 AM to midnight
  • Friday: 5:00 AM to 1:00 AM the following day
  • Saturday: 5:00 AM to midnight
  • Sunday: 8:00 AM to midnight

Hours can extend on public holidays or major events, so check the RTA app/site on the day you travel.

Metro tickets and Nol cards are available from ticket offices/vending machines at Terminals 1 and 3. Dubai Airports also states that passengers should travel light: metro luggage rules allow up to two pieces including hand luggage, subject to RTA size restrictions.

Terminal 2: do not look for a direct airport metro station

Terminal 2 is separate from the direct Red Line stations at Terminals 1 and 3. The practical options are:

  • take an airport taxi or authorised ride-hail directly to your destination;
  • use an RTA bus from Terminal 2 and connect onward to metro/bus where useful;
  • use the RTA journey planner for the live route that best matches your destination and arrival time.

If you arrive late at night, have heavy luggage or are travelling as a family, a taxi from Terminal 2 is usually much simpler than forcing a multi-step public-transport connection.

Airport taxis: available 24/7 from all terminals

Dubai Airports says Dubai Taxi Company taxis are available 24/7 at designated ranks in each terminal. Official pages currently show airport starting fares in the AED 20–25 range depending on vehicle/source, before distance, waiting time, Salik and other applicable charges.

That official-source difference is why we recommend checking the live meter/fare page rather than memorising one fixed airport flagfall. The final fare depends on distance and route.

Taxis are usually best when you have several bags, arrive outside metro hours, travel with children, or your accommodation is not close to a convenient metro station.

Uber, Careem and Bolt

Dubai Airports currently lists Uber, Careem and Bolt as available ride-hailing options. Book in the app and follow airport signage to the designated pickup point.

Do not assume ride-hail will always be cheaper than the taxi rank. Compare the live app quote with the convenience of simply joining the official taxi queue.

Bus: serves Terminals 1, 2 and 3

Dubai Airports confirms that RTA buses operate from dedicated Arrivals stands at Terminals 1, 2 and 3.

You need a Nol card to use the bus; cash is not accepted. Nol cards can be purchased/topped up at airport terminals, metro stations and selected bus stations.

Bus routes and frequencies can change, so use the current RTA/S’hail journey planner instead of relying on an old route number from a blog.

Which option should you choose?

  • Solo traveller, light luggage, Terminal 1 or 3, hotel near metro: metro is usually the easiest budget choice.
  • Terminal 2 arrival: taxi/ride-hail is simplest; bus is the lower-cost option if the route suits you.
  • Family or several suitcases: taxi usually wins on convenience.
  • Arrival after metro service ends: taxi/ride-hail.
  • Destination far from metro: compare taxi with metro + final taxi rather than choosing by fare alone.
  • Very price-sensitive traveller: metro/bus, but check operating hours and transfers before landing.

Common airport transport mistakes

  • Assuming Terminal 2 has the same metro access as Terminals 1 and 3.
  • Arriving after metro hours without a backup plan.
  • Buying no Nol card and expecting to pay bus fare in cash.
  • Choosing metro with oversized/heavy luggage without checking RTA luggage rules.
  • Using an old fixed taxi fare from a travel blog instead of the live airport/RTA information.
  • Confusing DXB with Dubai World Central (DWC), which has different transport links.
