For most travellers, the Canada Line is the simplest way from Vancouver International Airport (YVR) to downtown Vancouver. TransLink says YVR–Airport Station to Waterfront Station takes about 25 minutes. The main newcomer trap is the airport surcharge: since 1 July 2026, most trips starting at YVR and leaving Sea Island include a C$6.50 YVR Airport AddFare.
Quick choice
| Your situation | Usually easiest | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Downtown / Waterfront / Canada Place | Canada Line | About 25 minutes, direct rail service |
| Lowest predictable cost for one traveller | Canada Line | Transit fare + C$6.50 AddFare |
| Several bags / family | Taxi or ride-hail | Door-to-door convenience |
| Group of 3–4 to one downtown hotel | Compare taxi with total transit cost | YVR taxis use zone fares from the airport |
| Trip to YVR from downtown | Canada Line | No YVR Airport AddFare in the airport-bound direction |
Canada Line: about 25 minutes to Waterfront
YVR–Airport Station is on the Canada Line. TransLink says the Canada Line connects the airport with Waterfront Station in downtown Vancouver in approximately 25 minutes.
Waterfront is useful for Canada Place, Gastown connections, the cruise-terminal area and links to other SkyTrain/SeaBus services. Depending on your hotel, you may want to exit earlier at stations such as Vancouver City Centre or Yaletown–Roundhouse rather than riding all the way to Waterfront.
The C$6.50 YVR Airport AddFare
As of 1 July 2026, TransLink increased the YVR Airport AddFare from C$5 to C$6.50.
The extra charge applies to most trips that start at YVR–Airport, Sea Island Centre or Templeton stations and continue beyond Sea Island to Bridgeport or farther.
The surcharge does not apply simply because you are travelling to the airport. TransLink explicitly says there is no YVR Airport AddFare for journeys to YVR.
What does the Canada Line trip cost now?
TransLink’s current adult fares are:
| Fare type | 1 zone | 2 zones | 3 zones |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cash/contactless | C$3.50 | C$5.10 | C$6.70 |
| Compass stored value | C$2.85 | C$4.20 | C$5.40 |
A typical weekday daytime YVR-to-downtown trip crosses two fare zones, so the airport trip normally combines the applicable 2-zone fare with the C$6.50 AddFare. That means roughly C$11.60 using cash/contactless or C$10.70 using adult Compass stored value, subject to the exact time, payment product and any exemption.
After 6:30 PM on weekdays and all day on weekends and provincial statutory holidays, TransLink charges regular travel across the system as a one-zone fare, but the YVR Airport AddFare still applies when your trip starts at the airport and meets the surcharge rules.
Who can avoid the YVR AddFare?
TransLink lists exemptions for certain fare products, including monthly passes and some Compass tickets/DayPasses purchased away from the Sea Island airport stations, as well as specified concession/pass programs.
Do not buy a DayPass purely to “game” the surcharge unless it actually fits your day’s travel plan and the current exemption rules; compare the full cost first.
How to pay on the Canada Line
You can use a Compass Card, Compass Ticket or supported contactless card/mobile wallet at SkyTrain fare gates. Tap when entering and tap again when exiting so the system can calculate the correct fare and airport surcharge.
If using contactless, use the same physical card or mobile-wallet device at both ends of the trip.
Taxi from YVR
YVR uses taxi zone fares for trips departing the airport to destinations within its published zone map. The current airport-linked zone map shows Canada Place/Downtown at C$46. Trips outside the zone map use the meter.
YVR says the zone fare already includes the airport passenger-load charge; extra surcharges are generally limited to specified items such as tolls, vehicle-cleaning or a requested stop en route. Gratuity is not included.
For groups, the fixed airport taxi zone can be competitive once you compare it with several individual Canada Line fares plus the convenience of a direct hotel drop-off.
Ride-hailing
Ride-hailing is also available at YVR. Use the app’s official airport pickup instructions and compare the live fare with the taxi zone fare. Unlike the published taxi zone, app pricing can vary with demand and vehicle type.
Which option should you choose?
- Solo traveller to downtown: Canada Line is usually the simplest balance of speed and price.
- Two travellers with light luggage: Canada Line is still usually straightforward.
- Family/group with several suitcases: compare the total transit cost with the airport taxi zone fare.
- Hotel not near a Canada Line station: compare rail + final walk/taxi against a direct taxi/ride-hail.
- Going from downtown to YVR: Canada Line is especially attractive because the C$6.50 airport AddFare does not apply in that direction.
Common mistakes
- Seeing the regular 2-zone fare and forgetting the C$6.50 airport AddFare.
- Assuming the AddFare also applies when travelling toward YVR.
- Going to Waterfront when an earlier Canada Line station is closer to the hotel.
- Forgetting to tap out.
- Comparing a taxi against only one person’s transit fare when travelling as a group.
- Relying on an old C$5 airport surcharge — it increased to C$6.50 on July 1, 2026.
