Dutch health insurance changes again in 2027. The mandatory deductible (eigen risico) rises from €385 to €400. The government currently projects an average basic-insurance premium of €169 per month — but that €169 figure is not a final insurer price. Insurers must publish their actual 2027 premiums by 12 November 2026.

The mandatory deductible rises to €400

The Dutch government says the compulsory deductible rises with inflation from €385 in 2026 to €400 in 2027. This is the amount an adult generally pays themselves for care that falls under the deductible before the insurer starts reimbursing that care under the basic policy, subject to the usual exceptions.

This mandatory amount is separate from any voluntary additional deductible you choose in exchange for a lower premium.

Is the 2027 premium really €169 per month?

Not necessarily. €169 is the government’s projected average premium, based on expected healthcare costs. Individual insurers set their own final premiums.

That is why comparing insurers before November 12 is incomplete. By that date, insurers must have announced their new 2027 premiums, allowing a proper like-for-like comparison.

When can you switch?

Your insurer sends or makes available the policy information for the new year in November. If you want to change insurer, there are two practical routes:

  • Take out the new policy by 31 December: the new insurer can normally cancel your old policy through the switching service.
  • Cancel the old policy yourself by 31 December: you then have until 1 February to arrange a new policy. The new insurance applies retroactively from 1 January.

If you simply do nothing, your existing policy normally continues into the new year under the insurer’s new terms and premium.

Do not compare only the monthly premium

A policy that saves a few euros per month can cost more overall if your preferred hospital, therapist or specialist is not contracted. Government guidance specifically recommends checking provider contracts and what the insurer reimburses for non-contracted care where relevant.

  • Monthly basic premium.
  • Contracted hospitals and care providers.
  • Reimbursement for non-contracted care.
  • Voluntary deductible discount.
  • Dental/physiotherapy or other supplementary cover.
  • Customer service and claim handling.
  • Whether your existing care pathway continues with the same providers.

What about zorgtoeslag?

The government expects the maximum healthcare allowance for a single person to rise in 2027, partly to offset higher premiums. The exact amount you receive depends on your income and circumstances, so do not treat the maximum as a guaranteed monthly payment.

If your income estimate changes, update it in Mijn Toeslagen rather than waiting for a later correction.

What should newcomers do?

  • Confirm that you are required to hold Dutch basic health insurance.
  • Do not confuse the €169 government projection with your final insurer quote.
  • Wait for final 2027 insurer premiums before doing the full comparison.
  • Check provider contracts if you already use a GP referral, hospital or specialist.
  • Consider the deductible realistically — not just the premium discount.
  • Put December 31 in your calendar if you intend to switch.
