Leaving the UAE permanently is easiest when you handle the official cancellations in the right order. For many employer-sponsored residents, that means employment/work-permit cancellation first, dependent residence permits before the sponsor’s own residence, then bank/tenancy/utilities and final departure.
The short version
- For employer-sponsored residents, the company normally cancels the labour/work permit before cancelling the residence visa.
- The employee must sign the relevant labour-cancellation request; the employer must also confirm settlement of wages/end-of-service dues for the work-permit cancellation process.
- If you sponsor family members, their residence permits normally need to be cancelled before your own, unless an approved hold/guarantee arrangement applies.
- Residence cancellation also cancels the linked Emirates ID.
- Post-cancellation grace periods are not universal: current ICP rules use 30, 60, 90 or 180 days depending on residence category.
- Overstay fines after the applicable grace period are currently AED 50 per day.
1. If you are employed, start with the work-permit/employment cancellation
UAE government guidance says that when a company cancels an employee’s residence, it first approaches MOHRE to cancel the labour contract and work permit. The employee must sign the cancellation application.
The employer also submits confirmation that the employee has received wages and end-of-service entitlements. Before signing, check the final settlement carefully and keep copies of the cancellation and settlement documents.
If you are not under MOHRE because you work in a free zone or another special employment framework, follow the employment authority for your sponsoring entity rather than assuming the standard mainland process is identical.
2. Cancel dependent residence permits before the sponsor’s own residence
If you sponsor your spouse, children or other dependants, UAE government guidance says their residence visas must normally be cancelled before the sponsor cancels their own residence.
ICP also allows a limited hold/guarantee route in qualifying situations, but that is not the default. If family members are changing sponsor rather than leaving, confirm the exact transfer/hold process before cancelling the sponsor’s residence.
3. Residence cancellation also affects Emirates ID
ICP’s cancellation service treats the residence permit and linked Emirates ID together. Once residence is cancelled, do not assume the Emirates ID remains a valid active residency document.
Keep digital copies of your Emirates ID and visa documents before cancellation for your own records, but do not use cancelled documents as if they were still valid.
4. Your grace period depends on your residence category
There is no one-size-fits-all post-cancellation grace period. ICP currently publishes these broad categories:
| Residence category | Current grace period after expiry/cancellation |
|---|---|
| Golden, Green and Blue Residency holders and specified related categories | 180 days |
| Skilled workers in occupational levels 1–3 and property owners | 90 days |
| Residence issued with a guarantor/host | 60 days |
| Other categories | 30 days |
Do not assume your friend’s grace period applies to you. Check the live ICP/GDRFA record for your residence category and cancellation date.
ICP currently applies an overstay fine of AED 50 per day after the applicable legal period. Our UAE residence cancellation guide explains this topic in more depth.
5. Do not close your bank account too early
Before closing a UAE bank account, wait until your final salary, end-of-service settlement, deposit refunds and any card/loan obligations are resolved. Move recurring payments and download the statements you may need after leaving.
Tell your bank that you are leaving and ask whether the account can remain open as a non-resident account or must be closed/converted. Bank-specific rules differ.
6. Clear loans, credit cards and automatic payments
Check credit cards, personal loans, car finance, BNPL products, telecom bills and automatic debits before departure. A cancelled residence visa does not erase private debts or contractual obligations.
Keep closure letters or zero-balance confirmations for major accounts where available.
7. End the tenancy correctly
Follow the notice and handover terms in your tenancy contract. Arrange the final inspection, document the property condition, return keys/access cards and request written confirmation of the handover.
Tenancy systems are emirate-specific. In Dubai, Ejari/DEWA processes may be relevant. In Abu Dhabi, Tawtheeq and TAQA Distribution are the relevant ecosystem. Do not use a Dubai checklist as if it applied across the UAE.
For Abu Dhabi, see our Tawtheeq guide. For Dubai, see our Dubai tenancy/Ejari guide.
8. Utilities and telecom
Request final utility bills and account closure according to the emirate/provider. Return routers or other loaned equipment and close or convert mobile/internet services after you have received important OTPs and banking confirmations.
Keep your UAE phone number active long enough to complete critical bank, government and account verification if your provider/plan allows it.
9. Keep key documents before you fly

- Emirates ID copy.
- Employment contract and work-permit cancellation.
